Ergothioneine, de paddestoelverbinding die de bijnaam ‘levensduurvitamine’ draagt, blijkt een H₂S‑afhankelijk mechanisme te benutten om spier‑NAD+ te verhogen en de loopprestaties van oude ratten te verbeteren. De voordelen verdwijnen als CSE of cGPDH worden uitgeschakeld, en de effectieve dier‑dosis is ongeveer tien keer hoger dan de gebruikelijke supplementering bij mensen.
