U prvom ljudskom ispitivanju *Akkermansia muciniphila*, varijanta koja je pasterizovana (umrla), pokazala je bolje rezultate od žive forme. Insulinska osetljivost porasla je za 28,62 %, a nivo cirkulišućeg insulina pao je za 34,08 % u odnosu na placebo kod prekomerno težih, insulinskom rezistentnih odraslih. Gubitak težine i telesne masti, na koje svi nadaju, nisu postigli statističku značajnost, a neki autori drže patente i su‑osnovali firmu koja prodaje ovu bakteriju.
