Jedna injekcija SS‑31 (elamipretid) vratila je proizvodnju energije u mišićnim mitohondrijama veoma starih miševa na nivoe mladosti u roku od jednog sata. Rezultat potiče iz studije na miševima iz 2013. godine, a ne iz kliničkih ispitivanja na ljudima. Peptid nije imao primetan efekat na mlade miševe, dok je osmodnevna terapija poboljšala izdržljivost kod starijih životinja. Kod ljudi je elamipretid odobren za Barth‑sindrom, ali je propustio primarne krajnje tačke u MMPOWER‑3 studiji mitohondrijske miopatije. Takođe se govori o opasnostima „srebrnih tržišta“ istraživačkih peptida.
