Všichni účastníci nového pilotního výzkumu měli v krvi mikroplasty ještě před zahájením suplementace. Po 15 dnech 11 lidí užívalo 0,8 g denně chitosanu získaného z raků a hladina plastů v krvi klesla o 26,3 %, zatímco kontrolní skupina žádnou změnu nepozorovala. Předchozí studie u potkanů ukazují, že chitosan dokáže v trávicím traktu vytvořit gel a vyloučit plasty stolicí. S pouhými 21 účastníky, žádnými klinickými výstupy a nevyspělými měřícími metodami jde spíše o slibné vodítko než o prokázaný detox.
